Safety Equipment Information and List of Equipment

  • Never launch before daybreak or after dark. You not visible to other crafts on the water and your craft is not night rated.
  • Always sign the launch register before you go out and sign back in after you came back.
  • Always check the weather before and after launching while on the water.
  • Your ski has to be more than 3 meters long to meet SAMSA requirements for a paddling craft on the ocean.
  • You are not allowed more than 1 km out on the ocean. (offshore)
  • Check and insure that you have all safety equipment with you before you launch. See the list below.
  • Check your ski before launching make sure there are no cracks or holes from unloading your ski.
  • Always have your phone with you in a water proof pouch.
  • Take at least 750ml of water with you.
  • Always wear your approved Personal Flotation Device (PFD) on the water.
  • Never paddle alone.
  • Tell a family member when you will launch and be back.
  • Have your Kayak club ski number displayed on your kayak.
  • Mark your safety equipment with your kayak number. This so when the NRSI phones we can give your details in an emergency.
  • Always be fit enough to turn over your kayak and climb back on it should in overturn. Practice this.
  • Never launch outside your own capabilities.
  • Wear protective clothing depending on the weather of the day.
  • Don`t drink alcohol or use drugs on the water.

List of Required Safety Equipment

  • 1 x SABS approved life jacket with whistle attached, for each person on the ski.
  • 1 x 1st Aid Kit
  • 30 Metres of rope and anchor, minimum 1.5 KG. (length of chain fitted to anchor)
  • 1 x Hand–held flare or pencil flare kit. Must be valid for the full year of registration.
  • 1 x Smoke flare. Must be valid for the full year of registration.
  • 1 x Stainless steel signaling mirror.
  • 1 x Paddle for each person on ski.
  • At least one paddle must be attached to the ski with a lanyard (paddle leash) at all times on the water.

Paddling only Ski’s

  • 1 x SABS  approved life jacket with whistle for each person on the ski.
  • 1 x Hand–held flare or pencil flare kit. Must be valid for the full year of registration.

Crocker Ski’s

  • Capsize rope to be fitted on Crocker ski.
